Durban – Professional Photographers’ Paradise
Enormous scope exists for professional photographers in Durban, fondly known amongst South Africans as “Durbs” or “Durbs by the Sea”, and the reasons for these opportunities are as many as they are diverse.
Although it’s not the capital of the province of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban – this professional photographers’ and residents’ paradise – is the most populous city. The capital, Pietermaritzburg, is situated some 90km inland from the coast, and has more of a rural centre’s atmosphere, since it is largely surrounded by a farming community.
Virtually wherever one looks, the views and vistas are glorious, lush and verdant in and around Durbs. The natural landscape, gardens and parks are magnificent, offering the most amazing backdrops for taking awesome professional pictures; nothing requires staging.
Although the city’s economy is thriving, there’s a laid-back feeling about the place, its people and the lifestyle it offers. Some of this may be due to the diverse population, which gives the urban and rural areas a very continental atmosphere. At any given time, one will hear a myriad of accents and languages.
Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer and sea captain, named the territory “Terra do Natal” (Land of Christmas), when he arrived there on Christmas Eve in 1497. In 1824, its name changed to “Port Natal” when a trading station and small settlement were established. Eleven years later, Sir Benjamin D’Urban lent his name to the settlement, now named Durban.
Nine years thereafter, Natal (the province) became a British colony, under imperial rule. Towards the end of the century, sugar cane farming was so extensive that indentured labour was brought in from another British colony – India.
In the 1850s, German immigrants settled an area some 40kms from Pietermaritzburg, and today, there’s still an active German speaking community there. Durbs, in particular, is an immensely popular tourist, holidaymaker and wedding destination.
Needless to say, Durban is equally popular with professional photographers, one being Eloise of Eloise Photographer, a company which specialises in special pictures taken at weddings, engagements and lovely shoots of babies, children and family groups.
